Pool Safety Operating Procedures
All swimming Pool operators must develop a pool safety operating procedure (PSOP) and ensure every member of staff understands and follows them in order to fulfil their legal and moral responsibilities in protecting the health, safety and welfare of their employees at work, and members of the public using the premises.

Who needs a PSOP?
All swimming pools must have these procedures in place. This PSOP will ensure that the pool operator complies with:

HSE Industry Guidance:
-
Managing Health and Safety in Swimming Pools HSE Publication
-
Swimming Pool Water Publication by PWTAG)
Acts of parliament:
•The Health and Safety at Work etc Act 1974/1978 (NI)
•The Safety, Health and Welfare Act 2005 (Ireland)
•The Corporate Manslaughter and Homicide Act 2007 (UK only)
•The Equality Act 2010 (UK only)
•Safeguarding Vulnerable Groups Act 2006 (UK & NI)
•Protection of Vulnerable Groups (Scotland) Act 2007
•Safeguarding Vulnerable Groups (NI) Order 2007

Regulations:
•The Management of Health and Safety at Work Regulations 1999 (MHSAWR)
•Control Of Substances Hazardous to Health Regulations 2002 (COSHH)
•COSHH (NI) 2003

What does it involve:
Our trained Health and Safety Advisor will visit at a time to suit you and discuss different aspects of your swimming pool complex in order to ascertain the relevant contents required for your specific PSOP.

Once contents have been decided the advisor will need to gather all the relevant information in order to put this together. This is completed in different ways but may include:

talking to staff members
reviewing accidents & injuries
looking at layout and building plans
watching tasks being completed
reviewing Risk Assessments
Reviewing current procedurtes in place
Review of current equipment
Staff training records

Once all the information has been gathered the advisor will go away and put together the Pool Safety Operating Procedure. The length of time this will take depends on the size of the pool, bather loads, plantroom size etc.

Sometimes, when working through the document, other hazards become apparent and extra information may be needed which can also affect the time it takes to produce.
Our advisor will keep in contact throughout the process to keep you up-to-date if this happens.

What does the development of the Management System Cost?
The costs are varied and dependant on a number of factors, here are a few:

-
If the complex incorporates other facilities (e.g. a gym)
-
The size of your swimming facilities
-
Number of buildings involved
-
Any additional water features (e.g. water features, flumes)
-
Type of equipment being used poolside (e.g. pool covers, booms, moveable floors, hoists)
-
Type of equipment being used in the plant room (e.g. auto dosing, UV, ozone)
-
Other activities offered (e.g. swimming lessons, snorkelling, sea scooters)
